Depression in the Workplace

Depression in the workplace

If you are suffering from severe depression, it may not be possible for you to work for a while. However, if you normally enjoy work, and your job is not too stressful, returning to work can be an important milestone on your journey to recovery.

Ask your employer if you might be able to start back with lighter duties or reduced hours. Always take your recovery step by step – and don’t be afraid to let your friends, colleagues and family know how they can help you.

Working with a colleague with depression

Working with employees or colleagues with depression is not always easy. Workplaces are busy and there are deadlines that have to be met, even if somebody is not working at full strength. However, there are a few simple things you can do that might help.

  • Please don’t ask a depressed colleague to ‘cheer up’ or ‘get over it’ – this is the one thing they cannot do and it may make them feel worse. Instead, ask how you can help.
  • Make sure your colleague knows they are valued. A few appropriate words of praise at the right moment could make a big difference
  • Encourage your colleague to walk with you at lunchtime. Gentle exercise and fresh air can help lift a bleak mood.
  • Be patient and be ready to listen when needed. Ask gentle, genuine questions.
  • If you can shoulder some extra work for your colleague, please offer to do so.

 Seeking help

Keep an eye on your colleague. If he or she seems dramatically worse, please encourage him or her to seek professional help. If your colleague makes any hint about suicide, he or she needs immediate professional help.

A medical practitioner should be your first stop. However there are many alternative therapies, including hypnotherapy, that are very helpful to those suffering from depression.
